Serious preparation….

…not!

Sitting here watching the Belgian grand prix replay on Sky with my host, John Dutton, at well past midnight.  We won the pub quiz – 4th time in a row for the team, second time in a row for me (the last time being at the beginning of my summer vacation – seems a lifetime away).  Courage Best and, now, Rioja – not sure it’s the right combo for the challenge to come.

Behind me is my suitcase and bike box, together with a third case which is staying here for the next business trip after Monte Carlo – now away from the family for 3 weeks.  Luggage burden would have been even worse had not Ian and Mark taken the team kit to Geneva for me – thanks guys!

I regret to say that we have lost Tony Weller and Neil Golding from the G2MC roster in the last few days.  This gave Kevin Topple – a stalwart from the Bermuda cycling scene – the opportunity (15 mins was all he took to say “yes”) but we are still sad to see Tony and Neil leave the group.  We’ll see them in Monte Carlo which will be even more bittersweet – they were both desperately disappointed to give up their places.

Tomorrow (er, sorry…today) we meet in Geneva to build the bikes up, have a briefing from Classic Tours and – they’re dreading this – a pep talk from me.  No doubt there will be some banter around lack of training – well, too late now – you’ve done all you can and it’s now the real thing.

For those of a strong disposition, below are the links to the route we are taking.  Click on the “summary” tab in each map and look at the altitude profile.  There was a fair bit of banter among the participants when these came out:

Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5

Now, let’s take a look at that weather forecast…..

Anyway, time for some beauty sleep for me.  I’ll blog again tomorrow with some reactions to the team muster and briefing.  Aparently, we have some Go-Pro cameras coming with us, so expect some good footage along the way.

Best.  Charlie

drove up col de l’izoard tonight: saw a couple of cyclists seeking shelter in a grotto in the famous Casse deserte because it was…snowing! so you see it could have been worse!!!
